What is The Macklin Method Workshop?

Do you feel stuck in your career? You have options to help you make changes in your life.

Kara Large

No person can survive, or thrive, alone. However, from a young age we are taught that to be successful we must compete with others to achieve. We need to get the best grades to get into the top schools where we must be the best students to get the best jobs. Our independence is prioritized. Then we get thrown out in the world. Going at it alone might work for some time, but, eventually, something starts to feel like it’s missing.

Maybe you’ve been at the same job for a decade. You’ve barely moved beyond your starting salary and keep getting looked over for promotions. Or maybe you’re just starting out and have no idea how to be noticed at work.

You could also be well-established in your career but still feel a lack of security with your company. You might look around and feel there’s no room for you to grow. You could even be in one of the top positions at work, but you’re burnt out and unsure how to keep the business afloat. You don’t feel trusted or respected and keep losing your top players.

Maybe you aren’t even sure anymore about what you want. You feel you’ve been stuck in the same job, the same routine, the same patterns for so long, anything else seems impossible to imagine for yourself. Yet, you can’t shake the feeling that something is lacking from your life.

Even though you’ve done everything you were “supposed” to do to be successful, there’s a disconnect between where you are and where you want to be.

What if the key to success isn’t in what you do on your own, but in how you relate to others around you?

At MacklinConnection, we have spent over 30 years developing a method to help you build life-changing connections with other people. We believe having a solid support system is what allows you to live a fulfilling life. By establishing meaningful connections, you no longer have to figure things out all alone. You can move forward confidently, knowing you can ask for help.

We understand that it can be overwhelming to try something new or to reach out to others for support – we’ve been there. But you don’t have to do it alone. To help you determine if we might be a good fit to help you get “unstuck,” here are answers to some of the big questions we get asked.

What is MacklinConnection?

MacklinConnection is a virtual-based community designed to help you understand and practice the mechanisms of human connection. We understand establishing real relationships is the foundation of living a successful life. It is through establishing a network of help that you can make shifts in the way you live. We are here to help you learn the skills you need to form these authentic connections that can help you create the life you want (but have no idea how to get).

Using our framework – The Macklin Method – you’ll learn to move away from transactional interactions where people are only seen as a means to end. Instead, you’ll discover how to build mutually beneficial relationships. In our community, you’ll find a space to belong – a space where you can learn to connect with yourself and, then, connect with others. With us, you’ll have a safe place to be your authentic self and practice what you’re learning, so that you feel more confident about how to navigate life.

What is The Macklin Method?

Based in biology, the 7-part Macklin Method explains why and how humans connect — then shows the steps required to create connections.

Even though we might have been trained to believe our success is dependent on our individual efforts, connections are crucial to living a fulfilling life. Our connections with others determine our overall well-being and even influence our physical health. People who experience strong connections not only have healthier immune systems, they also have a greater chance of living longer.

Ron Macklin realized early in his engineering career that he had a passion for building and leading teams. And he realized that to succeed, he needed to build a deep network of support. He needed to learn why people connect and how they create results together. This realization led him on a 30-year journey that culminated in the creation of The Macklin Method and the launch of MacklinConnection.

The first part of the method is about how you exist and move in the world. What do you care about? Do you make choices that reflect what it is you really want? Or are your actions influenced by what you think you’re “supposed” to do?

You’ll begin to reflect on if you are acting authentically or if you’re pretending to be someone else or taking on another’s way of operating. Are you just going through the motions, or are you actually embodying the way you want to live?

This part of the method is all about self-inquiry. You’ll reflect on who you are and what you really want – not what you think you should be or what others have told you you are. This will help you gain clarity on your purpose and evaluate what actually gives your life meaning.

You might be wondering what getting to know yourself has to do with connecting with others. We believe when you understand yourself – your emotions, your past experiences, and all the stories you create in your head – you can better understand the people you want to connect with. Knowing yourself allows you to observe others and develop a sense of empathy. This is foundational to establishing a strong connection with someone.

The next part of The Macklin Method is about noticing. Approaching someone with the intent of establishing a connection only works if they are in a receptive state. You have to first notice that your listener is open about what you have to say. By observing the other person, you can learn when they are ready to be approached. If they are closed off, they won’t be able to hear that you would like to connect and be of help. Instead, they will be running through their own stories in their head.

For example, if someone seems stressed, it’s not a good time for them to be able to really hear your offer. You wouldn’t want to approach someone who is in the middle of venting about a project gone wrong. They won’t be able to fully process what you have to say. Once you observe that they are in a receptive state, you can make your offer to help and provide options on how to connect.

The final parts of the method involve giving someone the space to accept your help and be a part of your life. Ultimately, it is their choice to connect with you or not. You make an offer, but they choose if, and when, the connection occurs.

Making a connection requires repeating the steps of the method whenever you engage with another person. The Macklin Method is like any other skill; it requires practice to begin to make it a natural part of your life.

What is The Macklin Method Workshop?

In our Macklin Method Workshop, we share the 7-steps to form connections that will assist you throughout your career and allow you to experience a more fulfilling life.

To truly succeed in life, you need the support of others. This can be an intimidating idea, especially in a society that traditionally promotes independence. It can be overwhelming to even know where to begin with creating a network for yourself.

In the workshop, you’ll be given the opportunity to improve your ability to build powerful support networks by actually trying out the method and experimenting to find what works for you. Throughout the course, you’ll examine your personal and professional interactions and relationships, then design new ways to approach the people you want to connect with.

In The Macklin Method Workshop, we don’t tell you what to do. There are no lectures. There is no grading, no failing, no critiques. Instead, you are invited to discover the method through interactive discussions, thought-provoking readings with reflective questions, and practices you can try out in your daily life.

It has been shown over and over again that telling someone information doesn’t help them actually learn it. This is why our program is built to let you learn by doing. We are here to create a space for you to make connecting with others an accessible part of your everyday life by giving you the tools and strategies you need to actually put the method into practice (instead of just reading about it).

The workshop is led by an instructor who is experienced in the method and actively practices it. You’ll also be learning with a group in order to gain new perspectives and cultivate a sense of empathy. After going through the workshop together, you’ll have a whole new network of people who can continue to support you and offer guidance.

We have found that those who go through the workshop are able to make changes in their lives and in the workplace that actually matter. They finish the workshop able to successfully build mutually-beneficial relationships in their careers and in their personal lives. Our workshop participants consistently report feeling like they can trust and believe in themselves and others. They learn how to effectively communicate with others (which ultimately involves being an active listener) and establish themselves as someone others want to work with.

Even though our workshop won’t solve all your problems, it will give you the tools you need to feel capable to work through whatever challenges you might encounter. This newfound confidence will allow you to feel comfortable making decisions about where you want to go in life -- and you’ll have new connections with others who will help you get there.
