Ep. 65: Mastering Your Destiny Through Self-Leadership and Conscious Decision Making with Bobbi Kahler

In today’s episode, we had the pleasure of engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with Bobbi Kahler, an acclaimed speaker, podcaster, and self-leadership coach. Bobbi provided us with some invaluable insights into the power of self-leadership and conscious decision-making, and how these two factors can significantly shape our destiny.

Self-Leadership: An Intentional Act

Bobbi defines self-leadership as the intentional act of guiding oneself towards personal goals. She highlighted the crucial distinction between leading oneself and leading others. We note how the difference between these two concepts is often overlooked in both educational and professional landscapes.

Furthermore, Bobbi emphasized the importance of frontline managers, a group often neglected when it comes to investing in their professional development. She draws attention to higher positions and C-suite level positions often get additional training, but notes that is not true for people more involved in the day-to-day management of large groups of people. She encourages those managers to channel their enthusiasm in a constructive manner.

The Power of Choice

Bobbi relays her compelling personal narrative, recalling her eureka moment at the age of 23 when she understood how our lives are an accumulation of our choices. She shares her realization that if he could learn to make better decisions, she could change the trajectory of her life.

Bobby then explains why choice is so important and the immense power it holds. She elaborates that every decision we make in our daily lives, regardless of its magnitude, can have a lasting impact. The choices we make today shape our tomorrow.

Ron then asks the group to differentiate between deciding and choosing, two seemingly similar terms that hold different implications. Ron explains that for him ‘deciding’ often means selecting from existing options, while ‘choosing’ signifies creating new possibilities. He emphasizes that making a conscious choice in the present moment can liberate us from the trap of self-blame and open up new opportunities, effectively altering our path.

Believing in Possibilities

Bobbi also underlines how choice leads to empowerment. By choosing, we exert control over our lives rather than merely reacting to circumstances. She shares her mantra that there's always a way forward, encouraging listeners to believe in possibilities and options, and not to feel stuck in any situation.

She addresses the common fear that many leaders face: the fear of failure, criticism, or judgment. She encourages listeners to accept that fear is a part of the human experience, and the key to overcoming it lies in understanding the narratives we tell ourselves.

The group explores of how making mindful choices can affect our well-being and how it can help us escape feeling stuck. Bobbi shares her mother's skill of coming up with even unlikely solutions to help people see new options.

Bobbi emphasizes the importance of choosing the right story in our heads, shedding light on how our internal narratives can either empower or limit us. Finally, the group reflects on how the story we choose to tell ourselves can determine our path.

Join us to hear how understanding the idea of “self-talk” — and what you can do about it — could change your relationships and life for the better.
